PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports continues to promote digital education and new curricula to provide opportunities to strengthen digital education in Cambodia in line with the Strategic Plan for Education 2019-2023, and to improve the quality of education in the country.
Spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Ros Soveacha, said that Covid-19 has disrupted the operation of schools in the world and in Cambodia. However, learning and teaching in Cambodia is still available to students across the country through a multidisciplinary education approach in line with the Ministry of Health's health and safety measures.
He added that with the support of education staff at all levels along with all other stakeholders, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports has been turning the impact of Covid-19 into an opportunity to strengthen digital education ahead of schedule.
"The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports has responded in various ways, including the inclusion of digital education in the Education Strategic Plan 2019-2023 due to the presence of Covid-19. The Ministry of Education has been working to promote digital education faster than planned. For the academic year 2021-2022, the Ministry of Education will continue to work with the Royal Government to control and prevent the spread of Covid-19 by implementing education in a new way of life in line with education and health measures. The ability of teachers and students to use technology for teaching and learning is further enhanced through all forms."
He added that the Ministry of Education generally observes that most teachers used technology for online teaching before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. For teachers who need additional training to use technology for teaching in a variety of ways, including online, the Ministry continues to provide opportunities to strengthen capacity in all forms.
In this regard, the Ministry of Education has turned the challenge brought about by Covid-19, into an opportunity to strengthen the qualifications of teachers according to the Strategic Plan for Education 2019-2023, in order to develop human capital to participate in transforming Cambodia into a high middle-income country by 2030, and a developed country by 2050.
